It's written in the stars ... Wakefield to reach Wembley

Watersplash Omens, omens. Are Wakefield really on their way to Wembley ? With cup magician John Kear in charge, you just never know. Then there's the fact that the previous two times that they have beaten Barrow in the cup, in the first and third rounds, they advanced to Wembley - in 1968 and the "watersplash" final (above), and 1979 when they lost to Widnes. Sunday's fifth round trip to Cumbria also coincides with two anniversaries - 40 years to the day since Don Fox infamously missed the winning conversion in front of the posts against Leeds on May 11 1968, and 45 years since they last lifted the Challenge Cup, when Derek "Rocky" Turner led them to a 25-10 victory over Wigan on May 11 1963.

A deal ?

Dear oh dear Smitty. Are you a bitter Cas fan? Wakefield have as much chance as the other 15 clubs in the quarters and that includes Barrow. The magic of the cup is that you only get one chance, if you don't perform you're out. Yes Barrow is a good draw for the Wildcats but sometimes you need a bit of luck, whether that be the draw or a bounce of the ball. Many people tipped Wakefield to go out at the first hurdle against Salford but once again john Kear and his troops upset the general consensus amongst the so called experts in the game.

Kear is a miracle worker, I back him to turn the cup magic on again, but as always luck of the draw is a factor. As a Hull FC fan I was gutted when he went, he said it would come good towards the end of the season and it did, but he was already gone. Peter Sharp rode on the coat tails of the team Kear left, now it's his, Hull are struggling, bring back Kear if he will come.

Don't you remember a certaib Dave Whelan saying last season that it was written in the stars for wigan to win at the new wembley after their history in the competition?

Then look what happened.

Wakefield are a decent team...and with Kear in charge you never know. If they are going to do it they need to play Leeds at some point. Leeds are a great team but in big games when they are huge favourites (As they would be against wakefield) they often failt to perform. In last years grand final they were big underdogs.

The team of 2005 was alot better than this wakefield team, and made the grand final a year later. With sheffield Kear managed to avoid all the big guns, until the final, if i remember correctly.

So if wakefield are to do it, they are going to need a favourable draw to help them. But with all the big guns still there, i can't see it to be honest.

I am a neutrel when it comes to Super League but this year I am amazed at the job Kear has done at Wakefield. He has taken reject players like Moore, spotted the potential and turned them into top performing players, the half back gel brilliantly and have then best kicking game by miles in the comp. Well done to English coach Kear, Oh i also have £10 on them at 33/1!

Wakefield have a very good chance of getting to Wembley. They have superb half backs and a big pack but most importantly they have a tremendous team spirit.

Smitty, is this the same Sts that needed a fluke try in extra time to win at home against a Wakefield team ravaged by injuries?

Arrogant or what!

Omen ? Wakefield will no more get to Wembley than I'll run the 100 meters in under 10 seconds. They'll crumble at the first sign of trouble. They'll win at Barrow and get mangled by Saints in the quarters. Amen.
