So this is what Oxford and Cambridge have been waiting for!

KingsJim Knight is clearly delighted that Oxford and Cambridge are to accept the government's new engineering diploma. But don't you think his reaction is a little over the top?

It's all fine and dandy to say, as he has: "It's very good news that Oxford and Cambridge University have decided to publicly welcome the Engineering Diploma. The Diploma not only equips our young people with the skills that they increasingly need for work and further study but it also gives them the levels of knowledge that they will need to succeed at university."

But isn't his next sentence (see below) a little too enthusiastic? I didn't realise that Oxbridge had been waiting for this to finally prove its educational credentials.....

"Over the next decade I have no doubt that Diplomas will help Oxford and Cambridge cement their reputation as genuinely world class universities.”
