How to make money from YouTube
In light of the news that people who upload successful videos on YouTube may share in the revenues generated through advertising by parent company Google - here are some top tips for generating that online blockbuster courtesy of some recent research at Cass Business School.
According to an article on work by Caroline Wiertz and Professor Thorsten Hennig-Thurau (who has the rather intriguing title of Professor of Movie Marketing), there are three elements that distinguish successful posts from those that only just make it into double-figures.
1. Clips need to have a trash element - for example Dax Flame who delivers banal monologues about his daily life
2. Clips achieve a critical mass of viewers who spread the news quickly by email and word-of-mouth
3. Authenticity. YouTube viewers don't like finding out that things have been faked. Wiertz says: "If it's interesting, appealing and commercial, that's fine. But don't try to pretend you are one of them. That's doesn't go down well at all."
Here are my three additional tips based on my rather anecdotal research:
1. Use clips containing surly youths
2. Use videos of cats, dogs and hamsters falling off things
3. Have at least one tubby kid with a light sabre
The article appears in the winter issue of Cass's magazine InBusiness.
