Sidebottom can swing it at 5-2
Ryan Sidebottom looks a good bet to emerge as England’s leading wicket-taker during the three-Test series against New Zealand.
The first Test gets under way in Hamilton tonight (start 9.30pm) and the good news for those supporting England, who have been backed down to 8-11 to win the series, is that Sidebottom is fully fit after a hamstring problem.
The Nottinghamshire left-armer has enjoyed an excellent year since his surprise recall to the national team and, with just a little more rub of the green, could easily have added to his impressive haul of 29 wickets.
Conditions in New Zealand should suit the swing bowler ideally and there is no denying his appetite for more victims. Paddy Power, totesport and William Hill quote him at 5-2 and, provided he stays free of injury, that looks generous.
Matthew Hoggard, 7-4 with most firms but a standout 9-4 with Blue Square, should also be in his element but Stephen Harmison and Monty Panesar may have to settle for supporting roles. The bookmakers cannot make their mind up over Harmison, with his odds varying between 5-2 and 4-1. That rather sums up the speed merchant, who has never been the easiest to predict.
England are a best-priced 6-4 with VC Bet to win the first Test, with Blue Square and Coral making the Kiwis 11-4. The draw is 13-8 with Skybet.
