United are Moscow favourites
Manchester United are marginal favourites to win their third European Cup in Moscow’s historic all-English European Cup final.
Ladbrokes make United 8-11 to lift the trophy, while Chelsea are chalked up at 11-10 by Paddy Power. Recent history, though, points to Chelsea having the edge. The clubs have met 14 times since November 2003, with the Blues winning seven of those clashes and United only three. The other four matches ended all-square. This season began with the pair scrapping out a 1-1 draw in the Community Shield, but United went on to win that prize on penalties. Since then, they have traded victories in the league. United won 2-0 at Old Trafford in September just days after Avram Grant had taken over as manager. Then, last weekend, Chelsea beat United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge to keep the title race alive.
The bookies are predicting that a record-breaking £5 million industry-wide will be wagered on the showpiece final.
Paddy Power, spokesman for the firm, said: “An all-English Champions League final is likely to smash all betting records for an individual football match. This will be bigger than any other Champions League final, FA Cup final or even World Cup final.” United are 6-4 to win in normal time with Paddy Power, with Chelsea 15-8 and the draw 2-1.
Ladbrokes make United 5-4 to win both the European Cup and Premier League. Chelsea are 7-2 to achieve the same double.
Remarkably, Grant is still odds against being in charge of Chelsea for the start of next season. Ladbrokes offer 11-10 that he will be and 4-6 that he won’t..
