Will Federer make it six out of seven Wimbledon titles?

Federer

Frank Praverman

Roger Federer faces Andy Roddick in Sunday's Wimbledon showpiece.

It is the Swiss ace's seventh final, having won five of his previous six.

His cruise through the rounds has been stylish and almost carefree. His opponent, Andy Roddick, has had to fight far harder, with his four-set semi-final against Andy Murray likely to have taken a lot out of him.

Roddick's major weapon, his first serve, is the key: if it continues in the groove, Federer could have problems.

But will the world No 2's all-round game be too good for the 2004 and 2005 finalist? Is it Federer's fate to claim his 15th grand-slam title in the absence of Rafael Nadal, the current title holder?

Who will win the men's Wimbledon title? Let us know below.

It will be close, probably 5 sets, but I have to like Roddick's chances this time.

My prediction

Roddick 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 5-7, 7-5.

Then again, I don't play Tennis professionally.....

Federer will win. Just as he would have if Murray had gone through.

Posted by: Anthony | 3 Jul 2009 19:46:14

Oh Dear shell shocked here....
Murray lost????????
But credits to Roddick who served and volleyed really well...
Given the pressure of a Wimbledon semi-final in front of his home crowds it was very difficult for him to handle...
And for all British hopes Murray will end the drought of Britain in SW19 sooner ....
And in the other semi-final Federer just knew how to handle Haas...
So it will be interesting to see how Roddick approaches the match on Sunday...
If he does in the same way as he did today against Murray.....
I think Wimbledon can see a new champion

obviously roger federer will win his sixth wimbledon singles title and he´ll be back the next year for the seventh and go on and on, nobody can´t stop him....

Posted by: marco meza | 3 Jul 2009 20:12:26

Roger will win no doubt! he's got Roddick well measured long since, so really there's gonna be no surprise i can assure you..!

Posted by: Enrique Vadillo | 3 Jul 2009 20:39:57

Sure he will and become No. 1 again. Was hard to live in courty with no. 2 as one got such used to it...

Posted by: David Egli | 3 Jul 2009 20:48:49

Federer will win because of his class and his experience.

Posted by: Edmond de Roudille | 3 Jul 2009 21:15:06

Federer beat Roddick en route to his first three Wimbledon titles, for the loss of one set. What makes you think it is going to be any different. Perhaps he will come in with as good a plan as he had against Murray, but more likely it will be like his straight-sets thrashing in Australia in 2007.

Federer has already swatted away the Karlovic serve. Roddick's only hope is to serve and volley and force Federer to pass him instead of merely blocking back serves.

Posted by: Jonathan | 3 Jul 2009 22:17:57

Roddick's big serve hasn't troubled Federer too much in the past. Roddick's best chance is for Mirka to go into labour during the final!

Posted by: Darren | 3 Jul 2009 22:49:53

Roger has only lost 2 sets in seven meetings in slams to Roddick. Plus Roger has only lost a slam final to Rafa Nadal and also only been taken to five sets by Nadal.

I can only see one winner, he reads Roddicks game so well.

Posted by: james | 4 Jul 2009 00:19:59

Fed won't be passive from the back of the court like Murray, who didn't pressure Roddick enough I believe. If A-Rod stays at 75% of first serves in, he can make a match of it - but his returning is not strong. I think Roddick can nick a set in a tb but once his level drops slightly Fed will be all over him.

Posted by: Dave | 4 Jul 2009 01:36:14

I laughed at Darren's comment.
So true.
I'm quite confident that Federer will win. He's won 18/20 matches against Roddick, right?
I want Federer to reclaim his No. 1 title!

Posted by: Monique | 4 Jul 2009 03:54:29

Roddick is a different player under his new manager, he is playing better than ever, Federer is not the player he was and if Roddick can get 70% first serves in, Federer will lose the final. Go Roddick!

Posted by: hillus | 4 Jul 2009 05:46:03

I still belive that Muray will come back next year to win this wembledon. he is still young ,strong and determined player. After all he came very close to final.
Let us wish him all the best in the coming years.

Posted by: KathirGaman | 4 Jul 2009 08:00:18

It was a forgone conclusion who will win once Rafa pulled out.

Posted by: john eardley | 4 Jul 2009 10:00:04

Roger's ability to raise his game when needed both for the big matches as well as the big points is awesome. Look at his semi-final record, at Wimbledon, all seven matches won in straight sets, so every time he is arriving at the Final in peak form and condition, and with plenty left in the tank. The traumas of last year are behind him, he looks as good if not better than ever, still adding strengths to his game, (sliced backhand lob, faster serve, forehand dropshot). He will win in straight sets against Roddick. Unlike Andy Murray Roger can read Roddick's game too well.

Posted by: Alastair | 4 Jul 2009 11:05:52

In this case - I don't mind who wins.
Both Roddick and Federer are two excellent sportsmen and gentlemen.

Posted by: Gavin Staples | 4 Jul 2009 11:15:07

For Roddick, upsetting Murray is one thing although the Scot was the second strongest player in the tournament but Master Federer is so good that only a very strong, willful Nadal can beat him in an important final and that has been mostly psychological because there has not existed a classier player in tennis history.

Posted by: jose azcue | 4 Jul 2009 12:20:18

Roger Federer will win because he is good looking and graceful playing tennis.
I don´t know the first thing about the game, but seeing Federer play is great for a grandmother.

Posted by: Katie van Scherpenberg | 4 Jul 2009 12:41:55

Been there, done that.
Roger Federer.
With his record against Roddick
and his clinical dismantling of
the one-trick-pony and big server
Karlovic - though Roddick's overall
game, unlike Karlovic, is a lot more impressive - there should be no
doubt.
With No.6 and No.15, Coronation of King Federer will take place at CC/SW19 on 5/7/09.
All on Planet Earth should watch it.

Poor Roddick, his nightmare is back again. 3 straight set winning for Roger.

Posted by: Massimo | 4 Jul 2009 12:52:43

Andy Roddick is on fire at the moment, his spirit is electrifying. His battle with Leyton was inspiring, I love watching Federera but I have to say that I think Andy can win this, he's amazing.

Posted by: Merilyn Bonifacio | 4 Jul 2009 13:09:38

Federer, of course, maybe in 4 sets. He can handle Andy Roddick's serve, and outclass him in all the rest.

Posted by: Sharada Lartet | 4 Jul 2009 15:02:00

Federer in four sets. People talk of Rafa's absence. Federer in this form would have blown Rafa off the court. Roddick is a fine player and is in good nick. Federer is something else, he is a genius. He has raised the game to an art form. Only Tiger Woods can be compared to him for the joy he brings to the fans.

Captain Mohan Ram

Posted by: Mohan Ram | 4 Jul 2009 15:43:12

Simple. On current form, motivation, search for one more record, past performance, on almost any rational basis, Federer should win. Just a wee bit better, actually, Murray would have won the match. You expect Federer to play far better and therefore should win. Only thing is Roddick, still only 26, seems to be getting back to his best and therefore one suspects has a fighting chance, but a win will still be a miracle.

Posted by: Natarajan | 4 Jul 2009 17:13:15

Federer will win in three straight sets because he is playing better than ever. He is unbeatable again. And - by the way - Wimbledon feels so good without Nadal´s ugly bodybuilder tennis!

Posted by: Ben Kloss | 4 Jul 2009 17:39:27

I don't get all of the hype about Roddick's serve. Karlovic had just as a good a serve and was easily dismantled. Even Roddick get's over 70%, that doesn't mean Federer won't get even higher. If Federer wins 100%, then Roddick is done for. The fact is, all of the statistics (besides raw serving power) point toward Roger, especially slam-finals statistics.

I believe we are going to see a very good if not classic match in the Wimbeldon Final......What is amazing to me looking back at the last 2 years is that now that roger has gotten over his mono and debilitating back injury you can really see how much a difference that made in his results.....Those few problems that Federer had (mono and bad back) caused him to doubt and suffer mentally, and that was the edge that Nadal and other players needed to beat Federer.....Now that he is back it is possible that he dominates for another year or two before running low on motivation.....I wish Nadal was here and in the final so Roger could beat his main rival in the finals (And make no mistake about it that is exactly what would have happened).....I honestly believe that trying to keep up with Federer has taken a toll on Nadal's body, but more so his mind......When Roger beat Nadal so comfortably on clay in Madrid the paridan shifted and Nadal felt it and that is one reason he did not play Wimbeldon because he knew he was not going to win!.......Federer is the greatest player of all time and there is no room for discussion unless you are a jealous Nadal or Sampras fan which is silly because they both have admitted Roger is the greatest of all times..........Prediction

Federer def. Roddick
7-6,6-7,6-4,7-6

Posted by: Kennedy Myles | 4 Jul 2009 22:43:06

Federer is a class above and has never been under any pressure this year. With his nemesis Nadal not there he has been relaxed and imperious. Roddick will be cannon fodder for him!

Posted by: bruce | 4 Jul 2009 23:09:57

Roger will definitely win. He is confident, Careful and is a great Champ on and off the court.
It is always a pleasure to watch him and Rafa play. They are two of the most sportsmen like men in the game.
GOOD LUCK TOMORROW ROGER> MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU>

Posted by: Carol Hanna | 4 Jul 2009 23:25:38

Roger will win. He has the poise, grace and the know how to win. He really gets riled and is ready to make up for his mistakes, which are few and far between,
,
. May wishes are for you and hope all goes well for you tomorrow. I'll be watching from start to finish
Best to you and also a special prayer for Rafa.

Posted by: Carol Hanna | 4 Jul 2009 23:32:19

After reading the countless comments about who will win the finals tomorrow at Wimbledon, the absolute best was from the person who said that the only way for Andy Roddick to beat Federer would be if Roger's wife Mirka goes into labor during the match!!

Posted by: Lorna Lenley | 4 Jul 2009 23:47:16

i hope roddck wins as i feel sorry for nadal losing his no1 spot though no fault of his own, bad luck i would say. but i think federer will win
