A contender for the Billabong XXL Biggest Wave
Check out www.billabong.com for Al Mackinnon's shots of Greg Long at Dungeons in South Africa. Undoubtedly a contender for the XXL Biggest Wave category. There are just a few days left before the competition deadline. The sight of a beast of a wave like this might be highly disturbing for 99.9% of the population, but it's not just surfer Greg Long who knows his stuff. Mackinnon went through hell and high water to get this and other excellent shots, and like all the best surf snappers, can surf as well as he can shoot (he was reputedly in the line-up at Thurso East only recently, with just a handful of surfers - including local chargers Chris Noble and Bainers - on a massive day). This shot of Long at Dungeons is mean, moody, menacing, and, to me at least, highly disturbing.

I guess to judge by Hawaiian standards that wave must be, what, a good six feet...

Hey Peeps,
Amusing comment from Alf, I get your drift, in fact I'm told it gets up to 6ft on the south coast of Cornwall from time to time, maybe Greg Long, Laird Hamilton etc. should be looking down there for the XXL. - wink wink!
Thanks for the post Alex, much appreciated, but please don't make too much of my surfing, I'm really very average (as anyone who's seen me surf knows), it's just that having surfed it so often I feel very comfortable at Thurso East. In fact I hardly get to surf anymore, so I'm stoked as a grom when I do. We had a couple of really fun sessions in Scotland mainland / the islands, most of which I was shooting, but I felt having only surfed three times in 2006 it was time for a paddle before I forgot how to surf! The shots from that trip will be turning up in the coming months in various publications.
