What's up with the Blackberry Bold?

Blackberry_bold The Blackberry Bold has some serious software problems, it would appear. The smartphone which launched in the UK in mid-August (my review here) has been withdrawn from sale by Orange because of software issues.

Here's an internal memo from Orange which is doing the rounds of the mobile phone blogs:

"Following reports of software issues with the BlackBerry Bold handset across a variety of mobile operators, Orange has decided to act in the interest of its customers by suspending shipments of the device in the UK. We are currently awaiting feedback from RIM as to when an industry-wide fix for these issues will be in place, and expect this suspension to be an interim measure. We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may cause you. BlackBerry/RIM are doing everything they can to resolve this issue and will be completing full testing and validation to ensure future handsets do not have any quality issues. This may take a couple of weeks so it's up to us to do what's best for our customers."

The Bold has yet to launch in the United States and this is hardly likely to speed things up. Has AT&T been more diligent in its testing than Orange and others?

It is not a good state of affairs for RIM, the Canadian makers of the Blackberry, who have spooked investors by talking about the costs of developing new products hitting profits. Analysts are speculating that given RIM's lowly stock price, Microsoft might be circling. These rumours have been around before but who can say just now... What is clear is that the Bold appears to be going nowhere.

Been using the Bold for 6 weeks - it's fantastic. No idea what Oranges problem is. My Bold is stable, fun to use and POWERFUL. 8800 was good - this baby is great. I say this is FUD.

I've dumped my iPhone and returned to Blackberry (Bold) which rocks.

Other than net surfing the Bold is better in every way and who can really surf on a PDA sized screen properly anyway?

I use a Bold for work and I have an Iphone 3G. Iphone wins hands down, even if typing is slightly slower.

My Bold has had several problems since I got it. I don't trust it since messages don't get sent and calls incoming are rejected without me knowing. Wish I'd never got one now.
