Who is better? Ronaldo or Adebayor?

African power or Portuguese guile? Emmanuel Adebayor scored his 19th Premier League goal of the season for Arsenal against Blackburn Rovers on Monday night, and in the process drew level with Cristiano Ronaldo as leading goalscorer. But who would you rather have in your starting eleven?

Adebayor had a quiet debut season at the Emirates, but since emerging from Thierry Henry’s considerable shadow he has been in blistering form, particularly of late -scoring 13 league and cup goals since Christmas.

Ronaldo’s scoring prowess is enhanced by the number of times he shoots, making a phenomenal 126 attempts this season and hitting the target 70 times – and his all round game and partnership with Wayne Rooney must give him an edge.

Adebayor has shot a comparatively minuscule 66 times, although, with 42 on target, his accuracy is a lot better than Ronaldo’s.

So which of the two top Premier League strikers has impressed you most? Let us know your thoughts.

whomever helps the team out most wins the league? i see that that was a dig in favour of adebayor and detrimental to ronaldo. how foolish were you? anyone who knows football could see arsenal burning out by now. and adebayor is as useful as a trapdoor in a canoe at the moment.

Bit of an inane debate as they are totally different players and offer different threats and have different attributes. You may say that Ronaldo is more skillful at running at players or that Adebayor is better at holding the ball up and bringing other players into the game but that's what their winger/striker roles demand. Ultimately as an Arsenal fan if i had to make a choice though I would possibly go with Adebayor though for the simple reason that your front man (who can play up their alone) can be so important to you winning the title. I think Ronaldo is probably a better player (I cant remember many better players in the PRemiership and particularly any who have scored 19 goals with 12 games to go) but Ade is becoming a Drogba like player who can win you the league even if it sometimes not very pretty!

ronaldo is a midfielder and has already 27 goals, now what if he was a striker i bet it would be around 35. ronnie is the best, adebayor is scoring local goals i mean premiership, carling and the FA. WHEAREAS ronaldo is also the champions league top scorer, the lad is shining in europe, he has pace, strength and agility. those calling him greedy are idiots, perhaps they dont watch him, what will u do when the goal is staring at you... be serious RONALDO IS BETTER THAN ADEBAYOR and its a fact...

Do not forget that this is Adebayor's first full season playing as a first choice striker for Arsenal. He is already outstanding - this talk would not be relevant in a season or two.

Sorry, previous post was a response to PeteGee not mariusz.

Posted by: Tyler Kairns | February 15, 2008 at 04:25 AM

In my opinion, this is an utterly ludicrous comparison.

For a start, the two men play in totally different positions.

Do not get me wrong, I think Adebayor is a truly terrific centre-forward. However, a winger scoring 19 goals is so much more impressive than a centre-forward scoring 19 goals, and Cristiano Ronaldo offers so much more than just goals which is unlike Adebayor.

And I am an Everton fan by the way!

Posted by: John Curd | February 15, 2008 at 01:37 AM

Ronaldo being a winger would get the edge but if one reads between lines Adebayor is the obvious choice. ronaldo has his tricks on the ball and shoots at random but when its time to face Chelsea or Arsenal he fades away, not a big match player. When compared Adebayor is much better in this aspect and is improving all the time.

Last season Adebayor was in Thierry's shadows n i was surprised why Wenger signed him n moreover what interests Fergie. But now, he is probably next only to Drogba as the best striker in the premiership.

As a fan of Arsenal I only await more from Ade....when he puts together years like this on a consecutive basis he will get the nod.
Ronaldo is the best winger I have seen. The thing they both have in common is the ability to create havoc. I am sure the ManU fans are thrilled they have the boy. I am thrilled with the development of the young gunners, and believewith a little luck they can win the Premiership this year. I will ssay this...they only look to get better, as they seem to score from all over this year and that is what you want to see.
All in all this is cute, not a real debate, because there is nothing to really debate. I am thrilled Togo did not go on in the AFrican cup..I just have to find where I can see the FA cup game this weekend...I have SEtanta, DirectTV and it is not being televised here...Whassup wid dat!!!!!!!!!

I am a Arsenal fan, however, Adebayor need time to prove he is better than C. 7--who is the best in the world now~

Posted by: | February 14, 2008 at 10:55 PM

To mariusz,

Ronaldo has scored against the top 4 before. It's amazing how well you remember Adebayor scoring at Old Trafford last season yet fail to remember Ronaldo scoring at the Emirates this season. Has Adebayor scored against the top 4 this season (or even in the Champions League)? Nope.

Posted by: Tyler Kairns | February 14, 2008 at 09:23 PM

Why does Ronaldo get an edge for shooting more?

Posted by: joe | February 14, 2008 at 08:07 PM

You have to look at the big picture. just because you are scoring prolifically doesnt mean its a positive thing for the team. take for example when Van Nistelrooy left United, their most potent attacking threat, the team exhaled and they took the premiership. Same with Arsenal, after Henry left, the team exhaled and look like their going to win it this year, a feat that hasnt been matched yet (finishing fourth then winning it the next season). I think Ronaldo is detrimental to the team, just look at how many times he shoots, and those tricks and flicks do not work on world class defenders, hence his lack of potency against teams which matter.

As a Man United fan i'm bound to go for Ronaldo but this thread isnt as pointless as some may suggest. Adebayor is quickly emerging as one of the most potent strikers in world football...I was bemused last season when I heard rumours of United's interest in the Togo forward, but its clear Ferguson knew he would come good all along. Whether he believed he would be THIS good only he knows. His all round game has improved dramatically with long shots, runnning at defenders and headers resulting from a huge shot of confidence after the responsibility thrust upon him with the departure of Henry. However, Ronaldo and Messi are the joint best players in the world in my opinion, so Adebayor must prove that he isnt a passing fad (much like Fabregas in the early parts of the season) and fire Arsenal to the Premier League title if he is to snatch the crown away from the Great no.7 RONALDO!

im an arsenal fan,so ade.however ronaldo is great.

Posted by: jim | February 14, 2008 at 03:30 PM

The percentage accuracy says it all: Ronaldo 55.5 %, Adebayor 63.6 %. It's Adebayor for me!

Posted by: Layi Gooner | February 14, 2008 at 03:07 PM

Ronaldo is great at set pieces, the most effective way of scoring in the premiership. He gets the nod. Real shame Adebayor plays for Togo.

Posted by: mariusz | February 14, 2008 at 03:01 PM

How many times has Ronaldo scored against the other top 4? never I think is the answer. When the going gets tough (Tottenham away, Man City at home, to mention only the last 2 games Ronaldo vanishes) Old Trafford, the league, last season, Arsenal ran out 1 - 0 winners, who scored for them? (Adebayor is the answer by the qway)Ronaldo is glory seeker, not team player, Adebayor is the in form striker of the Premier League this year without a doubt, Ronaldo, you are a midfielder, provide goals for your forewards and you will be doing your job.

Posted by: PeteGee | February 14, 2008 at 02:26 PM

Ronaldo's a 'greedy player'??
With 27 goals as a winger... Who cares?

Posted by: Matthew Powis | February 14, 2008 at 02:19 PM

This debate is ridiculous! Okay so Adebayor is having a very good season and is clearly a great striker (like Drogba). However Ronaldo is in a completely different league, he is clearly the greatest player in the premiership and probably the world. His all round game is awesome and he is irreplacable. Anyone who says they would rather have Adebayor must be insane and are lying!

Posted by: Gareth Peyton | February 14, 2008 at 02:04 PM

whom ever helps his team come tops in May

as simple as that

Posted by: Joe | February 14, 2008 at 01:44 PM

Ronaldo is the best palyer in the world because he plays for Man Utd and the best player in the world must be a Man Utd palyer so is it this article suprising ?

Posted by: bob torrent | February 14, 2008 at 01:39 PM

Adebayor or Ronaldo?

Ronaldo is right-winger with 27 goals this season. If you need me to continue you're an idiot.

Posted by: Fillipe | February 14, 2008 at 01:28 PM

Ronaldo is the best winger I've ever seen. Adebayor has been awesome this year, but still has a long way to go before he reaches the same level and replaces Dean Windass as the best striker.

Posted by: James | February 14, 2008 at 01:06 PM

Ronaldo was the player of the year last season, its looking more and more likely that he's going to be the same this year. He's done it for longer. You also have to say that even though he is not a conventional winger, he still does more work defensively than Adebayor and is a much better provider of the ball for the rest of his team. Clear choice, Ronaldo.

Posted by: Tom Wright | February 14, 2008 at 01:00 PM

Ronaldo is better hands down. He has everything in his armour, skill, pace, strength, and two great feet. With his goal scoring feats from the wing what more could you ask for.

Posted by: David Kufuor | February 14, 2008 at 12:29 PM

Ronaldo is a winger, Adebayor is a striker. Ronaldo is joint top scorer. Who in their right mind would not want a winger who scores 20+ goals, there isn't another winger in the world like him. There are however plenty of strikers in the world who score lots of goals. This is a stupid thread and a complete no brainer for anyone who knows anything about football.

Posted by: J Roberts | February 14, 2008 at 12:06 PM

Initially, Adebayor struggled but he's in white-hot form now. His accuracy and assists goes way higher than Ronaldo's. Man U would have notched up more goals but, for Ronaldo's profligacy and selfish attitude in front of opposing goals. He always pushes to score at the detriment of team-play. His attitude of wanting to go it alone, even when his team-mates are well placed to score, is scandalous. People forget easily that he's only an attacking mid-fielder and not the number 9, with his style of play.

Posted by: Samora | February 14, 2008 at 11:54 AM

Ronaldo is a greedy player, just shoots all the time, only got (I think) 2 assists this season because whenever he gats a sniff of goal he shoots. Adebayor is more of a team player, Ronaldo undoubtably has the better potential but needs to play more for the teeam and less for his own glory.

Posted by: PeteGee | February 14, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Can,t split them, dont want to but if pushed Adebayor can cause havoc but jesus imagine thae two up front ooh new scoreboards please

They are modern day all singing all dancing mix of van basten and laudrup with a bit of denis law for devilment
