Bill Edgar's Thursday trivia question
Question: Manchester United’s meeting with Barcelona this week has provoked memories of the two 3-3 draws they played out in the 1998-99 season. United also recorded two 3-3 league draws during one season in the 1980s when those opponents went on to win the English league title. Who were their opponents?
Come back tomorrow for the answer.
Yesterday we asked you: Which club won a domestic cup in the 1980s having played the lowest-ranked remaining team (at the time of those matches) in each of the four rounds before the final.
Answer: Norwich City, when they won the League Cup in 1985. After seeing off Preston North End (relegated from the third tier that season, but not the lowest-ranked team left) in the second round, they were given the ultimate easy path to the final. They faced the lowest-ranked of the other 31 teams in the third round (Aldershot, the only bottom-division team left), the lowest-ranked of the other 15 teams in the fourth round (Notts County, relegated from the second tier), the lowest ranked of the other seven teams in the quarter-finals (Grimsby Town, the only non-top-flight side left) and the lowest-ranked of the other three teams in the semi-finals (Ipswich Town). In the final they beat a Sunderland side (1-0, via an own goal, naturally) who were relegated that season having finished nine points below Norwich, who also went down.
