Bill Edgar's fiendishly difficult Friday Quiz - with the answers

Another ten of the most difficult football trivia questions were posed on Friday. Now that they've left your head feeling like a bowl of spaghetti we can put you out of your misery. Scroll to the bottom to read the answers and also the one to Thursday's teaser.

Question One: Four English clubs spent at least six seasons in European competition in the 1990s (defined as the nine seasons from 1990-91 to 1998-99). They were Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and which other club?

(A) Newcastle United

Question Two: Brahim Hemdani has started 18 matches for Rangers this season in the Champions League and Uefa Cup. How many domestic league games has he started (before this weekend)?

Question Three: Which player was on the losing side in European Cup finals against Liverpool twice in the space of five seasons for different teams?

(A) Berti Vogts
(B) Ule Stielike
(C) Rainer Bonhof

Question Four: Which is the only top division club to have been relegated via the play-offs since they were introduced in the 1986-87 season?

(A) Charlton Athletic
(B) Leeds United
(C) Chelsea

Question Five: Manchester United have won ten league titles since Liverpool were last champions in 1990, reducing the Anfield club's lead in title successes from 18-7 to 18-17. Before that sequence, how many titles did Liverpool win without United doing so?

Question Six: Which player appeared 22 times for England Under-21 in the late 1970s and early 1980s yet never won a senior England cap?

Question Nine: What is the average age of the 20 goalkeepers – one at each Premier League club – who saw the most action in the league last season?

Question Ten: Villa Park and Hillsborough have staged the most FA Cup semi-final matches (including replays) since the Second World War. Which venue has held the third most? 

(A) Maine Road
(B) Old Trafford
(C) Wembley

Answers:

Question 1: C, Aston Villa. All Uefa Cup: 1990-91, 1993-94, 1994-95, 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99. 

Question 2: A, 12

Question 3: B, Uli Stielike. He played for Borussia Monchengladbach in 1977 and Real Madrid in 1981. 

Question 4: C, Chelsea. For the first two seasons, the lowest-placed top-flight club that had not been automatically relegated played off against the three teams immediately beneath the sides automatically promoted from the second tier. Charlton Athletic maintained their top division status in 1987, beating Leeds United in the final, but Chelsea lost to Middlesbrough in the final in 1987-88.

Question 5: B, 11. After United won the 1967 title, Liverpool won in 1973, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1990.

Question 7: C, 3. Bert Turner, of Charlton Athletic, against Derby County, 1946. Tommy Hutchison, of Manchester City, against Tottenham Hotspur, 1981. Gary Mabbutt, of Tottenham Hotspur, against Coventry City, 1987.

Question 8: A, 1. Belgium could not get past the group stage in 2000, when they co-hosted the tournament with Holland, who reached the semi-finals.

Question 10: A, Maine Road

On Thursday we asked you: Name the manager of a Premier League club in the season just finished who was once fined as a player for insulting a policeman at the end of a match.

Answer: Chris Hutchings, sacked by Wigan Athletic last November, was fined £250 in 1983 for committing the offence when playing for Chelsea against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Dominic - firstly, I assume you mean question seven. Secondly, the question makes perfect sense while your query is a complete mystery. The phrase "the last four" means the semi-finals, if that helps.

Question Seven doesn't make any sense. Host countries qualify automatically. Do you mean defending champions failing to qualify?
