Champions League group stage draw live

Europeancupap

That concludes the draw for the group stages of the Champions League. Good luck to all involved.

Group A: Chelsea, AS Roma, Bordeaux, CRF Cluj.

Group B: Inter Milan, Werder Bremen, Panathinaikos, Anorthosis Famagusta.

Group C: Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon, FC Basle, Shakhtar Donetsk.

Group D: Liverpool, PSV Eindhoven, Marseilles, Atlético Madrid.

Group E: Manchester United, Villarreal, Celtic, AaB Aalborg.

Group F: Lyons, Bayern Munich, Steaua Bucharest, Fiorentina.

Group G: Arsenal, FC Porto, Fenerbahçe, Dynamo Kiev.

Group H: Real Madrid, Juventus, Zenit St Petersburg, BATE Borisov.

Do excuse the delay between pots being drawn. Uefa like to dispense player awards between drawing teams. So far Petr Cech, John Terry and Frank Lampard have taken the prizes for best goalkeeper, defender and midfielder. Will they complete a clean sweep?

Eusebio, the Portugal legend, is announcing the award for best forward. We're guessing it is going to Ronaldo.  And the winner is ... Cristiano Ronaldo. Well, there's some justice for Manchester United. Ferguson looks on like a proud father. Nice.

The Champions League draw runs the Eurovision Song Contest close for faffing about. Hosts Melanie Winiger (pronounced 'vinegar') and  Pedro Pinto host proceedings and their first task is to introduce a tedious video montage of last year's competition backed by an electro-rock soudntrack.

More interestingly, the camera cuts to a view of Sir Alex Ferguson and Cristiano Ronaldo sitting rather uncomfortably next to each other in the audience.

Follow the draw as it unfolds from 5pm. But while you wait with bated breath, here is a rundown of how the process works:

Clubs are drawn in eight groups of four, with teams playing each other home and away and the top two clubs progressing to the last 16, at which point the tournament reverts to a knockout format. Clubs from the same country cannot be drawn against each other in the group stage.

Pot one: Chelsea, Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United, Lyons, Inter Milan, Real Madrid.

Pot two: Bayern Munich, PSV Eindhoven, Villarreal, AS Roma, FC Porto, Werder Bremen, Sporting Lisbon, Juventus.

Pot three: Marseilles, Zenit St Petersburg, Steaua Bucharest, Panathinaikos, Bordeaux, Celtic, FC Basle, Fenerbahçe.

Pot four: Shakhtar Donetsk, Fiorentina, Atlético Madrid, Dynamo Kiev, CRF Cluj, AaB Aalborg, Anorthosis Famagusta, BATE Borisov.
