David Gold: Kevin Phillips has given Birmingham a great start
We couldn't have hoped for a better start to the season. Starting the new campaign with two fabulous wins in two matches really sets the standard. Kevin Phillips has played a principle role in our achievements with his two winning goals, first against Sheffield United and then against Southampton, and has already proven to be an intelligent signing which is paying dividends. It was a great shame for him to receive taunts from the Southampton fans - what better way to silence them with a goal after being on the pitch for less than a minute?
Sheffield United proved formidable opponents in our first game and I feel they will be one of our biggest rivals to win the Championship this year. Although I was delighted to beat them, I did feel for them as they defended superbly. They looked a strong team and it took an incredible strike from Phillips to beat them. When he picked up the ball, I wasn't sure of his options, but the next minute Paddy Kenny was picking the ball out the back of the net! Along with United I think Reading will be a great danger to us this season. Reading have lost Dave Kitson which is a great loss to them, as it always is when losing a striker, but they will still be a strong side all the same.
Along with Phillips, Lee Carsley has also been a fantastic signing. As captain, he is enforcing strength to the team through his extensive experience and quality. Last year Carsley played 49 games for Everton and his experience in the Premier League makes him an integral part of the team. He commands great respect among the team and they all learn from his football wisdom.
We have had continual interest in James McFadden, which is expected with a player of such high quality. It is a compliment to both club and player to have one of your players head hunted. McFadden and Sebastian Larsson are quality players and low risk signings, having played at the top level, which is why they generate such interest.
In our position what we need are players for the present, to get us back into the top flight. I know Seb is desperate to play in the Premier League; the best way for him to do that is to play week-in-week-out for Birmingham City at the top of the Championship, score lots of goals and get back us into the Premier League - not a bad prospect for a 23-year-old!
The Premier League may contain a twist in its tale this year. Chelsea have had a flying start with a 4-0 victory over Portsmouth. Manchester United have had a sluggish opening in comparison, but I don't believe this dictates what to expect for the rest of the season despite the speculation that Chelsea will run away with the title. Manchester United were unable to field a full strength side against a strong Newcastle team and Liverpool must not be forgotten. This season my money would be on Liverpool to spring a surprise, especially if they are able to sign Gareth Barry.

A reasonably controversy free article Mr Gold, shame! Although It was, I thought, at least constructive on some of the spite and vitriol from opposing fans in response to your comments last year - was relatively amusing.
