Bill Edgar's Friday football quiz

The weekend is nearly here again, so to get you in that winning mood it's time to tackle another fiendishly difficult Friday football quiz compiled by The Times's resident statistical genius, Bill Edgar.

If you find any of these brain-teasers too taxing, check back again on Monday when we will post the answers.

QUESTION ONE: C 1960. It happened in a friendly against Spain in Madrid.

QUESTION TWO: B 1. Gareth Southgate (Middlesbrough).

QUESTION THREE: A 1990. At the World Cup in Italy.

QUESTION FOUR: C Stoke City. They were known simply as Stoke up until 1925.

QUESTION FIVE: A 1994. Ilie Dumitrescu and Gica Popescu, the Romania internationals, arrived in August and September respectively. 

QUESTION SIX: B Derby County v West Ham United, November 10.

QUESTION SEVEN: A 1950. Arsenal won at Highbury from third to sixth round, met Chelsea at White Hart Lane twice in the semi-finals and beat Liverpool at Wembley in the final.

QUESTION EIGHT: A There were the only two occasions when West Ham scored more than three goals at home in his 21-month reign. West Ham 4-1 Macclesfield Town; West Ham 4-1 Blackburn Rovers.
