Name your favourite football-related song

Bragg Readers who have listened to this week's Game podcast will have heard Phill Jupitus make a plea to listeners that was inspired by Rick Broadbent's list of the top 40 songs that reference sport.

Jupitus was so impressed by the chart that he called on you to compile an equivalent top 40 songs about football. We have already received some crowd-pleasing suggestions, including the Billy Bragg tracks God's Footballer and The Boy Done Good, as well as Munich Air Disaster 1958 by Morrissey and The Kinks' David Watts.

Now we want you to flesh out the list. Post your suggestions in the comment box below.

Asante Kotoko by Pat Thomas

A hymn of praise to one of Ghana's most famous clubs: a passionate vocal and a great dance track.

Best football record I've ever heard by some distance (not that the competition is high)

Maybe I am totally wrong here! But I always had the suspicion that Rod Stewarts - Killing Of Georgie Part II had other meanings. Rod is a United nut!

"Oh Georgie stay!
Don't Go away.
Oh Georgie stay
You take our breath away"

Bestie again?

Totally Irish opinion! I agree with Joxer Goes To Stuttgart when Ireland beat England 1-0 in 1988.

But a classic - Put 'Em Under Pressure by the Irish Italia 90 squad and Jack Charlton. And a tribute to the greatest of them all - Belfast Boy by Don Fardon about George Best

It's got to be the England 1982 World Cup song, 'This time (we'll get it right).'
"We're on our way, We are Ron's twenty-two, Hear the roar,
Of the red, white and blue
'This time, more than any other time, this time.
We're gonna find a way, find a way to get away, this time'
'Getting all together, we'll do it right'.

Cue an unfit Keegan's missed header and a 2nd phase exit :-(

I was going to say either World in Motion or Three Lions - then I remembered two Fall songs - Kicker Conspiracy and Theme From Sparta FC - that are both better than anything else by miles.

Come on... you know what the best is...

Everton's 1995 seminal FA Cup Song....

All Together Now... By the Farm

Best FA Cup song ever.... FACT.

England's 1990 world cup track, New Order 'World In Motion' is the best I've heard by an absolute mile!

The Anfield Rap - The best football related song ever. FACT.

"How's he doin the Jamaica rap, he's from just south of the Watford Gap!..."

Posted by: JP | 24 Oct 2008 09:46:55

The best ever footy song; Kicker Conspiracy by the Fall.
Somebody else mentioned Sparta and they were nearly right.

Posted by: Divvey Fallfan | 24 Oct 2008 09:13:50

Gilbert O'Sullivan's "We will" is not a football classic by any stretch but pure genius to manage to get the words: "I bagsy-being in goal" into the lyrics!

"On Sunday next if the weather holds
we'll have that game
but I bagsy-being-in-goal
not because I'm good..."

It may not be a professional reference but one we have all heard in the playground at some time in our lives (although I normally used bagsy-not-being in goal!)

Soapy, right song but different lyrics:
"When the ball hits the head of the fan in row z its Zamora!"
Perhaps it was corrupted by some happy Hammers...

Posted by: I Scream | 23 Oct 2008 23:50:19

I don't want to go to chelsea - elvis costello

Posted by: rikeee | 23 Oct 2008 21:58:44

Have to agree the best by far is defo HMHB's "all I want for christmas is a dukla Prague away kit"!
Another great one is the fall's "theme from Sparta FC"... Oh and of course, "anfield rap"!!!

Posted by: jimmypink | 23 Oct 2008 21:19:41

Surely has to be Three Lions by Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds. Specifially the '98 version

Posted by: Nic | 23 Oct 2008 20:33:54

So many suitable Half Man Half Biscuit songs (in addition to Paintball's Coming Home which has nothing to do with football other than that great line mentioned by Marc).

All I Want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit (specifically about Subbuteo)
Friday Nights and the Gates Are Low (supporting Tranmere)
The Referee's Alphabet (not really a song, more a monologue)
Dead Men Don't Need Season Tickets (a man attempting to blag his late friend's ST from his widow)

And many more.

Half Man Half Biscuit - All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit

classic tune

Scream, i think you're referring to the song Brighton fans came up with when BZ was banging them in for fun down at the Withdean a few years ago.

The tune is from Dean Martin's "That's Amore", and went a little something like this;

"When the ball hits the goal, its not Shearer or Cole, its Zamora

He's the best in the land, only cost hundred grand

THAT'S ZAMORA!"

Quite brilliant, I agree.

Posted by: Soapy | 23 Oct 2008 13:48:58

"Joxer Goes To Stuttgart" by Christy Moore, without question. A tale of pre-boomtime Irish lads making making their way to and through Euro 88 in a big van, set to the tune of the Match of the Day theme, and featuring an imagined bust-up between the protagonist and Jack Charlton about the starting line-up to play England.

Posted by: Burnsie | 23 Oct 2008 12:46:34

In X-Ray Spex's I Am a Ciche, they couldn't possibly have been singing about Warren Barton in the chorus as I always thought, could they?

Posted by: Daniel Pettinger | 23 Oct 2008 11:22:26

Howzabout;

My Perfect Cousin - The Undertones
Gertcha - Chas n Dave
Paintball's Coming Home - Half Man Half Biscuit

The last has the greatest lyric of any song. Ever. To the tune of 'If I Were A Rich Man'....

"If I were a linesman I would execute defenders who applauded my offsides"

Posted by: Marc Sinfield | 23 Oct 2008 08:05:07

Alison Rudd sang a beautiful lament about Bobby Zamora's scoring prowess to a tune by an Italian singer who's name I can't recall, it still sticks in my head many podcasts later...
