Video: Steven Gerrard's best goals

GerrardThe Liverpool captain scored his 100th goal for the club last night with a typically stunning drive from outside the penalty area. We recall five more of his best, linking to video footage for each.

Sheffield Wednesday, 1999
His first for the club and one to rank with his most memorable. Aged 19, Gerrard took possession 35 yards from goal, beat two players with consecutive body swerves before driving his shot into the bottom corner. An awesome talent had arrived.

Manchester United, 2001
No goal is more satisfying for a Liverpool fan than one scored against their bitter rivals. How sweet for them then to watch Gerrard surge forward on the counter-attack from just inside the opposition's half and beat Fabien Barthez from distance.

Olympiakos, 2004
Perhaps the most significant strike. Needing three second-half goals to progress from the group stages of the Champions League, Liverpool had only two when Gerrard struck an unstoppable half-volley with four minutes left. Almost six months later, his side were champions of Europe.

Middlesbrough, 2005
Possibly his best. In a season when Gerrard considered moving to Chelsea, he provided what some thought would be the perfect valedictory effort with a dipping volley angled across the goal from 30 yards, earning his side a point after poor performance.

West Ham, 2006
No match showed better Gerrard's ability to haul his side back from the brink than the FA Cup final of two years ago. He equalised first with his side 2-1 behind and again when they trailed 3-2 with a 30-yard show-stopper in injury time. Liverpool won on penalties.

If you want to compare Lampard and Gerrard, you have to go beyond stats. It's the quality of goals and the competition they've come against. Lampard doesn't bring his team back from the brink the way Gerrard does. It's becoming absurd how often Stevie G rescues Liverpool. I've NEVER heard anyone call a match "the Lampard game." Gerrard's won a Champions League title with a team comparable in quality to their own reserves. No CL titles for Lampard. Lampard's two Prem titles were on team's in which anything less would have been a massive underachievement. Take Frank off those teams and Chelsea still wins. Not so for any of the silverware that Liverpool has collected in the Gerrard era. This season Rafa has finally let Gerrard settle in at the centre. Til now Gerrard's career has been marked by spells all over the pitch to compensate for his team's lack of quality on the wings among other positions. Lampard has always had expensive teammates playing every position, allowing him to stay comfortable in his favorite position. By his own admission, Gerrard's career would look even better to this point if he didn't get shipped all over the pitch by Liverpool and England. These are the intangibles that don't show up on the statsheet. Gerrard has them and Lampard is found wanting. 25 years from now Lampard's name in football will barely be a memory, while Gerrard's name will be engraved in stone.

Okay, I'm Man Utd thru & thru. Gotta say, Gerrard is class. Yes Lampard has higher strike rate & what not, but it's not just about goals. Gerrard has got Keano's never say die attitude: one of those players who lifts his team with his own performance & work when things are tough. Best ever all round midfielder? Well that's tough considering Bryan Robson (okay, I may be baised but he was amazing), Zidane & co - but he's gotta be in the top 5 or 10. Mind you, with all due respect to the fella, I hope he has whole load of hamstring injuries this season - that's how important he is to Liverpool! :-) Well done Steven Gerard.

The comments"AAAAWwwwwww,ye beauty,Wat e hit son,wat e hit!!!" says it all.Have you heard Andy Gray react to any other players goals like he did to that .NO

Lampard - 115 goals from 374 games. Gerrard 100 goals from 448 games. Lampard also has more assits. Gerrard is a good long ranger but Lampard is far more accurate. Lampard is a squillion times better.. Close this chapter!

It strikes me as funny that anyone suggesting that Gerrard is anything but the best all-round midfield player in the world is simply a Man Utd fan who needs to get out more. Any manager would give his right arm to have him in the team, including funnily enough Sir Alex who rates him as highly as he did Roy Keane. I will concede that he doesn't produce the same form for England as he does for Liverpool, but then very few players have decided to turn up for England duty in recent years.

Class player, one who can do everything on the field. Enough said....

And his header in the '05 Final? Wasn't in the perfect position, but got so much on it, and the way it just dipped under the bar, tell me a striker who wouldn't have been proud of that one; and talking of significance.....

last mins equaliser against olympiacos, west ham in fa cup final, 1st goal against milan in 05 cl final, says it all basically. He has played right back, right hand side midfield, holding midfield, left back, behind centre forward, now how many players in the world can play in these positions. ......... you can`t name it, can you? because there is none.

I think it's ridiculous that people criticise the things that Gerrard does badly, is that really necessary? You wouldn't criticise an oncologist because he can't treat the common cold.

Over rated?, excuse us Liverpool fans if we over rate gerrard a touch....but bear this in mind.

100 goals mostly from midfield, almost single handedly winning a european cup and FA cup. The only player in football history to score in every cup final he's ever played (about 6 i think)....can play and play very well in about 5 positions, scores cruicial and spectacular goals, player of year year once, young player of the year once....i could go on!

Have to agree Liverpool fans can't help but over-rate Gerrard. They call him a great player, whereas other pros and managers just call him world class.

Posted by: Sharker | 3 Oct 2008 15:11:41

Over-rated player, especially by Liverpool fans. People talk up his good points, of which there are many, but conveniently forget his tactical and possessional weaknesses.

Posted by: Harry Boulton | 3 Oct 2008 14:45:49

Surely his dipping lob in the recent CL marseille game away deserves to be in there, incredible finish...

That Olympiakos goal still sends shivers down my spine. What a player.
