Send us your best amateur football team names

FabiocapellomarcasplandReal ones. Not fantasy football names. Original and amusing team titles that have the opposition scratching their heads and wishing they had a more exciting and exotic banner to play under rather than the name of the pub they drink lager tops in after the match.

A few examples include A3 Milan from Surrey - although the similar use of Real, Sporting, Dynamo as prefixes to place names has become quite common - and some gems from the Maccabi League South in London including Bafana Bafana, Real Life, Zig Zag and the Pure Orange Function Band.

The name could offer a little intrigue. Although a rather dull name at first mention, the now defunct Eye Games Centre from Suffolk could very occasionally conjure up images of a friendly place where thousands of people enjoyed every type of recreational activity. Alas, no such place existed and manager 'Dobbler' Lockwood could never remember how he came to give the club its title.

We know you can do better, so send us your best amateur team names and the stories behind them by leaving a comment below and we'll compile a Times Online league table of our favourites.

Valleyholics - an amateur side from Grand Anse Valley in Grenada, they thought that Valley Alcoholics was not a very sporty name, so it was condensed to Valleyholics.

My 5-a-side team at uni was called 4 men and a Badly. Much to the annoyance of the badly. So we then changed to 4 men and a raging baldy.

I play for a veteran's team - average age 50+ - called "Arthritico Madrid", team motto "The older we get the better we were".
For a spell we were known as "Real Social Dads" but Arthitico sums us up best!

The Shrimp Shack Shooters. its from the movie "That Thing You Do." the full title of the band name in the movie is, "Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters," therefore our captains nickname is "Captain Geech" (but we just call him geech for short).

Some years ago, a friend of mine, in Manchester, got together with a group of pals to form a team called Hardly Athletic. They played in a Manchester Sunday league. To their amusement, the players were often asked by opponents about the whereabouts of 'Hardly' - e.g. "I've lived in Manchester all my life and I've never heard of a district called Hardly before; where is it?".

We started as a team of unfit friends based in Newlyn, Cornwall, 20 years ago but have now evolved into 2 teams in 2 different leagues - our name? Newlyn Non-Athletico FC. The second team didnt wish to be 'second' so as we are in a fishing village we thought it better to name them the 'C Side'!

I used to play for a team full of Irish in Toronto called Gigfy.

It took me half a season to finally ask what Gigfy meant. Expecting a deep and meaningful reply I had to laugh when it was explained: Guinness Is Good For You!

There are some references here to "Norfolk 'n' chance", I'm sure there were football teams with this name, but I think they copied it from a racehorse owner. The names of horses are scrutinised very carefully to save the blushes of Peter O'Sullivan etc, so the owner knew he couldn't just slap this name on his horse. Instead he named a horse "Cornwall in chance", and he raced it. Then he named a horse "Sussex in chance", and he raced that one. He hoped by now he had established this form of name as some sort of bizarre stable tradition, and named his next horse "Norfolk in chance". The name was rejected.

Local power station had a team called "Power Rangers". I would love to have seen what their kit looked like. Capes, helmets and all perhaps?
