How should Sir Alex Ferguson spend the money?
Frank Praverman
Sir Alex Ferguson will have £80 million burning a hole in his pocket if the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid goes through.
Who should he spend it on?
Kaka is a no-go, as the Brazilian is also on his way to the Bernabeu. But what about David Villa? Or Carlos Tevez?
And is the forward line where the Manchester United manager should be prioritising? What about in midfield, where Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs were outplayed by Barcelona in the Champions League final?
Or does he need cover at the back, with Rio Ferdinand spending more and more time on the treatment table?
How should Ferguson spend the cash? Let us know now.

One player only, but he's the only one to satisfy the supporters, Lionel Messi, but we all know he's untouchable.

I think they should buy Gerrard and Lampard and successfully play them together and then quietly mock every England manager who has failed trying.
Posted by: Michael | 11 Jun 2009 11:14:48
The £80 million will be paid up front with no performance related terms.
Therefore the budget will be £105 million which ought to be spent as follows:
Ribery + Benzema + Daniel De Rossi.
Posted by: James Neill | 11 Jun 2009 11:17:39
think Fergie should move for Benzema and Aguero...Bayern rate Ribery at 65mil. and I dont want United to spend that much money on one player....
but we need a world class midfielder too...a player like Xavi iniesta (highly unlikely though) or Hamsik....
Posted by: zico | 11 Jun 2009 11:18:34
Eto'o and Ribery would be the perfect replacements and still leave cash left over. His head was getting too big and defenders were starting to wise up and clatter him out of the game, i think £80 is a hell of a deal and united will come away from this in a better position. You have to trust Fergie on this one.
Posted by: Rozza | 11 Jun 2009 11:18:42
Without Ronaldo United are missing something that all great teams need - raw speed. Villa will bring this, and his goal scoring and positional play ahead of Rooney will surely bring the best out the the England hitman, instead of having to cover for Ronaldo's lack of team ethic.
Also, a winger is required, with only Nani, Park and Tosic capable of playing on the wings there is a dearth or world class talent on the flanks. Ribery would obviously solve this but could we afford him, would Bayern sell? Valencia is the cheaper option but is he actually United class?
Benzema is the third option, as a player who can be utilised as part of a front three we could see Fergie revert back to the 06/07-07/08 tactic of a free flowing front line. But instead of Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez there would be Berbatov as a lone front man with Benzema and Rooney flitting either side.
A midfield three composing of Carrick/Fletcher/Anderson/Giggs/Scholes/Hargreaves could support?
Questions questions.
Posted by: Piers | 11 Jun 2009 11:19:46
United have hopefully already secured a replacement if not we are likley to be forced to pay over the odds for players as we did with Berbatov last year. I would like to Frank Ribery if we can get him for under £40m, Valencia looks to be on his way and maybe Benzema or Aguero if we lose Tevez. Attacking midfielder attacking midfielder Joao Moutinho from our feeder club Sporting would be a great asset.
Posted by: Zaffree | 11 Jun 2009 11:19:55
I think if we buy a new left-winger and a new right-winger then we can move Rooney across and actually play him as a striker instead of a left-winger. He will make the goals up. If we get him playing for us like he does for England he can be a 30 goal a season player.
Hopefully we can get Silva and Ribery and I would be very happy. I think we would have a better overall team. Also wouldn’t just have to rely on Ronaldo and could start playing better football rather than just holding the ball up and then giving it to him.
I’m genuinely happy he is going, can deffo be a good move for the club if we spend that money right.
Posted by: Mark | 11 Jun 2009 11:23:15
With the £80 million I reckon we need a world-class winger, and Carlos Tevez on a permanent basis. David Silva? Ribery? I think Valencia doesn't quite cut it. I'd prefer Silva myself, and with the cash left over, maybe even another winger?
Posted by: Liam Gilchrist | 11 Jun 2009 11:51:06
With Ronaldo (and most likely, also Tevez) leaving, so does much of our attacking threat. The goalscoring will be distributed on other players next season, with Rooney and Berbatov sharing the most of the responsibility. Berbatov is no goal-machine, but capable of producing chances and some serious moments of brilliance. Rooney seems like he is about to flourish this season; with Englands nationalteam being the catalyst. But still, we need quality in depth, as Welbeck and Macheda are still too raw to be considered for 20-25 games a season. Based on this, our main transfer target should be a proven goalscorer, a clinical striker, able to feed on the crosses and interact in all the quick interplay that United represent. He should have a presence, and the ability to function as a single striker by his own right (i.e. NOT like Berbatov, who really needs a partner.). Players like Karim Benzema (Lyon) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter) would fit brilliantly. They're quick, skilled, deadly with both feet and strong enough to cope with the Premier League.
I also think United should complete the signing Valencia, and consider an additional midfielder/attacker like Stephane Sessegnon (PSG) or Eden Hazard (Lille).
In the central areas, we have Carrick, Anderson, the new and improved Fletcher, Scholes/Giggs, Gibson and hopefully Hargreaves. This should be sufficient, but it all depends on Hargo's injury.
At the back, we have plenty of options, with the Da Silva brothers coming through the ranks, Brown returning from injury and the steady progress of Johnny Evans, players like Rio, Vidic and Evra have cover. I personally think Rafael is worth the gamble as first choice, as long as they school him a bit more defensively. As for keepers; I think this is the right time to change. Ben Foster should be given a proper run in the first team with Van der Sar as a backup. I simply don't rate Tomasz Kuszczak enough.
One quality striker, two wingers (with one being a young prospect) and cash to spare in the January-window (if we get in trouble with injuries).

We should buy Benzema and De Rossi + a good Defender. Or maybe buy Torres from the Yanks, as they have no money.

SAF should buy both Frank Ribery and Karim Benzema for 50 mil and buy Mathieu Flamini for the winger's position. He's a good player and last I heard, he was warming the bench at Milan and looking for a way out.
Posted by: Anil Hanagud | 11 Jun 2009 12:32:27
I feel that we should get Huntelaar + $65m from Real Madrid for Ronaldo, then sign up Tevez, go for David Silva and De Rossi ... I seriously don't think Valencia is still good enough for the Manchester United set up ... And Nani needs to be given a serious run in the team - I am sure he is better than what we have seen of him so far ...
Posted by: Rajendra | 11 Jun 2009 12:35:18
First of all I hope United doesn't feel they have to buy Tevez now that Ronaldo is leaving. that wouldn't solve anything. United need a goalscorer and they need pace and creativity om the wing.
I also believe Fergie should consider strengthening the midfield after seein Barca completely outplay us in the CL final.
I would love to see Ribery, but if not I think Mata or Ashley Young could be decent wingers. Valencia is ok, but overprized at 17 mill!
Up front Karim Benzema would be the perfect man now that it seems Zlatan and Villa ar bound for Barca and Real Madrid.
If Sporting really want to swap Moutinho for Nani, I'd say "yes, please!" in a second.
I really hope Fergie goes out and get to or three top class players as soon as possible, I would hate to see it drag on until the last day of august like last season.

Benzema is the best shout - cost about £25 million and can be developed into the next ronaldo/kaka, he's got a united work rate as well. also.. TEVEZ - united were fools to muck him, offer him stupid money and a big cuddle to stay.
i reckon they need a ball winner though - someone who's gonna destroy a midfield, yaya toure or flamini (whose been benched by milan)
Posted by: Jamie T | 11 Jun 2009 12:39:14
i like the comment of torres, but will need a hacksaw to prise him away from anfield.
btw, the other part of the comment, 'from the yanks', well, aren't United 'the Yanks' too ?D

Posted by: Madridista forever | 11 Jun 2009 12:49:55
He has to go out and get Ribery to lessen the impact of Ronaldo leaving.
I'd take a look at the likes of Silva and Benzema too, they are going to need the assists and goals from somewhere and it won;t be from Nani and Park.
And Flamini is a good shout as it looks like Hargreaves will be out for a while, could be something like this:
----------------VDS
Da Silva, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra
---------Flamini, Carrick
----Ribery, Rooney, Silva
-------------Berbatov
Posted by: Neil | 11 Jun 2009 12:57:43
Ezequiel Lavezzi
And maybe Tim Cahill
Put the rest of the money in the bank. You really need it.

Man U would do with Chris Katongo from Zambia. He currently plays for Arminia Belefield in Germany. The fella is quite a work horse who runs and delivers from the first whistle to the last. How about him partnering with Manucho from Angola? The any from Luanda is a sharp shooter when nicely positioned and thus his loan spell may well be over at Hull City. Go back to the big boys before the small ones finish you my boy!
Posted by: Imasiku Aka | 11 Jun 2009 13:01:00
Question is, where are Man Utd going to find someone as obnoxious as Ronaldo? Not only did he score goals galore but he also deflected some of the hatred off of Ferguson. It's all going to be back on him again now.
Posted by: ronmanager | 11 Jun 2009 13:02:58
Prices will be inflated because of the windfall, and all the big clubs are after the same players. Also, I doubt the money will be all be given up front. United should buy two or three from Benzema, Silva, Toulalan, Yaya, Aguero and Lahm. Maybe Ashley Young. I would like Ribery but I doubt he'd join an English team. I would also like De Rossi, but i doubt he'd leave Roma. Valencia is not a replacement for Ronaldo, neither is Nani. I would jump at the Nani-Moutinho deal.

Torres wont go to Utd in a million years, he is a super footballer not a supestar, this is why Tevez will also leave.
Ronaldo was every bit a united player, just as he will be every bit a Real player, interestingly, another club Torres would never go to.
He got married last week, two guests, what a legend

Giggs,Scholes and G. Neville must be used sparingly becuz they have aged and tired. Sir Alex must beef up the midfield with some steel and quality play maker like De Rossi (AR Roma)or Gourcouff (Bordeaux) Carrick and Fletcher are not good in terms of making play except for Anderson who is usually played so deep in midfield. If Hargreaves returns United will be boosted. Sir Alex must bring in Benzema or Zlatan and Ribery for the wings to support Nani. I personally believe with games Nani can become another Ronaldo in no time.

Marcos Antônio da Silva Gonçalves.

Posted by: Alex, Dumfries | 11 Jun 2009 13:33:37
The hole left by Ronaldo means both a winger and goalscorer are needed. Assuming (hoping) that Valencia is a done deal, a striker is probably next on the list. However I think Rooney could play a much more central role next season. His England form suggests a transition into a prolific goalscorer (at last). This leaves a gap on the left which points in only one direction - Ribery. A holding midfielder is imperative, what with the ageing Scholes and Giggs and Hargreaves' future as a pro looking shady. I think a monster is needed - Yaya Toure or Inler are both a good shout. As for Tevez, he's not worth 26 million. Simple! If Sir Alex is planning on playing one up front, there's nothing wrong with having Rooney, Berbatov, Wellbeck and Macheda to choose from. Right back is a problem area also. The little Brazilian is too little, Brown too injury prone and O'Shea just doesn't cut the mustard = Glen Johnson.

In my opinion, the best player for Man Utd will be slovak player Marek Hamšík or slovak defender Peter Pekarík. The yound star Freddy Adu from DC United will be good investion to future. I hope that will be any slovak player, because the best slovak player of the year 2008 Martin Škrtel is famous and his national player are famouse too.

Ferguson should use some of the money to pay off "The Greatest Debt Levels In The Football World".
I fear Tevez will move on to bigger and better things (Man City, Liverpool, Real, Chelsea) so that is an unlikely option.
I think Ferguson should invest in young players with potential.
If any players come to fruition over the next few years it will enable Man Utd to sell them to Real Madrid for a profit.
Obviously, Ferguson has about a 1 in 5 record of success with transfers but with a little luck he should be able to make Real stronger in the future if he chooses well.
Valencia from Wigan is also a good option. Real are interested but feel the step up to that level would be too much. A year in Man Utd's first team would allow Real check his effectiveness in the CL and buy him next year with more certainty of his skill.
I think buying some players from the London/Surrey area is likely to sell more shirts (see Beckham) so that is also an option to be considered.
I look forward to seeing the results of Man Utd's scouts over the next few years.
Posted by: Chay Asquith-Smythe | 11 Jun 2009 14:33:40
I don't think we should go out and buy the worlds best players (Ribery, Villa, Silva, Ibrahimovic). I think we should follow the strategy that we've followed for years. Invest in the games best 16-20 year old talents and turn them into world class players. No one is going to replace Ronaldo. This money needs to be invested, not blown on the worlds most high profile, and highest earning players.
Posted by: HarryBoulton | 11 Jun 2009 15:03:05
United were outplayed in midfield in the Champions League final and against Liverpool in April.
Signing a defensive midfielder like Felipe Melo, Marcos Senna may help. Alternatively if Ferguson thinks Fletcher and the return of Hargreaves in January will suffice, Wesley Sneijder, Ribery or Marek Hamsik could provide the necessary spark in midfield.
A striker to play ahead of Rooney may also be needed, although Feguson is more likely to deploy the much maligned Berbatov in this role next season.
Posted by: TS | 11 Jun 2009 15:04:32
United should add in the normal 20 -25 million they normally spend a season and buy Newcastle. They could then use St James Park and the Championship as a proving ground for the youth academy.

Yuri Zhirkov & or Franck Ribery be good start for wings, also along with Valencia, either Ireland, Alonso or Arteta would bring much needed creation to final third- how Scholes used to do- What about Fellaini as tough battling centre midfielder? Maybe include Sneijder & or Robben in deal with Madrid? Either change tactics an game plan to suit Berbatov or sell him an get Benzema or Santa Cruz, same with Nani either use or move on. Sign Tevez- who's commitment is immense an with Rooney forms a tough forward line. Use money to strengthen whole team- as Giggs, Scholes & Neville all in last season an will need replacing, could also buy best possible keeper available- Cesar of Inter, Frey from Fiorentina even Bolton's Jaaskelainen. This isn't the end, more a new beginning as Fergie's shrewd, ruthless an competitve enough to have things right in 2 years. FACT

A decent winger has to be first on the list, a fairly big name preferrable to add a bit of flair that will now no doubt be lacking. Any of the big names mentioned on here will do nicely. Spend a bit on some players which need developing, to break through over the next couple of years. Midfield will be fine, Hargreaves will be back and even if he's not 100% he's another otpion and has the experience domestically and in Europe. No need to worry about scoring goals, we've some top notch strikers and about 7 players on the pitch at any given time that are capable of scoring goals.

both aguero and villa can play on the right flank but they're both unlikley. Most likely will be valencia or ribery. Hamsik would be a nice addition and option for us, though i cant see that happening. Benzema could be the best striker in the world with the right direction but i'd rather not see rooney pushed out on the left when we've got the oppertunity to play him in his best postion now that ronaldo is finally leaving. Tevez is a complicated situation and huntelaar has been mentioned as an alternative and 3rd strike option should Tevez leave but its complicated. If we could try Tevez on the right, that could be an option, kind of like what liverpool have done with Kuyt, Tevez is like Kuyt, has and can score goals but isn't prolific in that position, his work rate, team work and determination is first class though, just like kuyt, but can we invest 25-30mil based just on that when its maybe not what we need or what the player wants (to bench warm)

Silva and Villa. Both are much cheaper than Ronaldo, and verymuch better.
As Xavi and Iniesta are unavailable a good partner of silva could be Fabregas. All three will be costless than that spoilt chap which is Ronaldo. He will have problems with Pellegrini the coach, because he does not stand "superstars".

Why does ManU need to feel compelled to blow all that newfound cash. If reports are to be believed, the team is a couple hundred million in debt. Seems to me there is an obvious answer as to what to do with the money here, especially given how ManU has such a great reputation for bringing in young talent. Bring up a youngster or two, become fiscally responsible, oh what a concept. Ah, but then the EPL already has one Arsenal.

Ribery & Benzema are the 2 most likely that come to mind, though I think prizing Ribery away from Bayern will be much tougher than getting Benzema. Both would add great quality to the squad. I think the time has finally come for Rooney to be the man at OT, he HAS to play up front and if he does, he'll bag 30+ goals easily.
There is only one player that I would love to see added to the United midfield, but he would never join and his club would never sell, and United probably wouldnt ever bid for him...Michael Essien.
The league might be pretty difficult for United next yr, but Champions League is ours!

A winger, we dont need another striker, we have Macheda and Wellbeck. Would like to see some youngsters given chances next season, namely more of Tosic and Nani. Nani still has the raw talent, he lacked confident due to lack of starts. Start with Berba, Tevez and Rooney. With Macheda and Wellbeck as back up. Tosic, Nani, Park, Fabio and Rafael on wings. Developing your squad is much more interesting than splashing out on established "stars"

Alexis Sánchez from Chile should be the new recruitment for Man United, last season fergie was probing and was rumored transfer to a possible departure of cr7 ... I think we should get him and become the new united 7. Is a great player, with similar qualities than C.Ronaldo, excellent winger-striker, Is the right moment!!
Is going through a good moment in Udinese and chilean selection, holds undisputed in Chile and Udinese, just by scoring 2 goals against Bolivia. CHILE is second in the road to SouthAfrica 2010, just behind Brazil! left to play four dates!
1º Brazil 27pts
2º Chile 26pts
3º Paraguay 24pts
4º Argentina 22pts
CHEERS and VIVA Manchester United!

karim benzema n frank ribery

there are fans, who realy think manu could buy ribery, benzema and a third firstclass player for the 93million €.
with the rest of the money manutd could perhaps buy etoo, torres, da silva and sergio ramos.
and if theres still money left, they should save the rest.
and now manutd-fans, awake from your dreams. after this transfer, the clubs will milk manutd like a cow and claim excessive fees for their players.
(sorry for my english, i`m from bavaria)

utd should sign david silva and villa if he does not want to sign for madrid and also maybe Benzema. Ribery is too old for his price and silva is much younger and will get more goals! Tevez isnt worth signing due to his inability to score despite being a striker. Valencia would also be a good signing from wigan.

Why are so many people suggesting to go and spend a shed load of cash on spanish/south american players that will end up wanting to move to spain in 1-2 yrs time. Invest in uk players. kind of makes sense doesnt it?????

Alexis Sanchez from Udinese. This winger has great skill and ive seen him play in the Chilean National team and he is really good with the ball. THis guy could definitively be the next Ronaldo. Fergie has been looking out for this chap for quite a while so Im thinking that this could be the person to sign.

I think Manchester United, should go after Steven Gerrard, and considering the shambles that Liverpool are in, they might be able to Gerard at a good price :)
