Best of the Euro games

Some of the great games in the history of international football have graced the European Championship finals. Who can forget England's 4-1 victory over Holland at Euro 96, or the final of Euro 2000 between France and Italy.

Here’s our top ten – feel free to disagree and let us know your top ten.

10. Russia 3 Czech Republic 3, group stage, 1996
The Czechs were cruising into the knock-out stages at half-time at Anfield – two goals to the good thanks to headers from Jan Suchoparek and Pavel Kuka. But the match was transformed after the break, Aleksander Mostovoi and Omar Tetradze dragging Russia, who were already out, level inside an hour.

A magical long-ranger from Vladimir Beschastnykh with just five minutes left completed the turnaround and sparked joy among Italian fans, whose side was drawing with Germany at Old Trafford. But in the 88th minute, the future Liverpool player, Vladimir Smicer, equalised to send the Czechs through and Italy out.

9. England 4 Holland 1, group stage, 1996
England produced one of their finest 45 minutes at Wembley to destroy the Dutch. Holland squandered several good chances in the first half but went in behind thanks to Alan Shearer’s penalty, awarded when Danny Blind tripped Paul Ince. After the break, Teddy Sheringham headed in from a Paul Gascoigne corner and England were rampant.

After a brilliant dribble down the left, Gascoigne fed Sheringham, who smartly laid the ball off to his right for the onrushing Shearer, who finished with power and precision. Then Sheringham scored again, tucking away the rebound after Edwin van der Sar saved Darren Anderton’s deflected shot.

No question England were going through, but at that point the scoreline was sending the Dutch home and Scotland into the knock-out stages. As England relaxed and Holland pressed, Patrick Kluivert found the goal that was enough to spell relief in Rotterdam and gloom in Glasgow.

8. Portugal 2 England 2 (Portugal win 6-5 on penalties), quarter-finals, 2004
Michael Owen put England ahead after just three minutes, but Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side faltered when their talisman, Wayne Rooney, went off injured. Portuguese pressure paid off in the 83rd minute when Helder Postiga, a flop at Tottenham, headed in Simao Sabrosa’s cross.

England thought they had won it in the 89th minute, but Sol Campbell’s header was controversially disallowed by Urs Meier, the Swiss official, for a supposed foul. The first half of extra time did not bring a “silver goal”, with England defending courageously, but the host nation took the lead with a splendid drive by Rui Costa in the 110th minute.

But Frank Lampard equalised five minutes later to force penalties. David Beckham shockingly sent his attempt high over the bar after seeming to slip, and Darius Vassell also missed, leaving Ricardo – the Portugal goalkeeper – to finish off England clinically.

7. West Germany 3 Holland 2, group stage, 1980
A stunning German performance, thanks in no small measure to Bernd Schuster, a nippy midfield player who had a hand in each of his side’s goals.

A Klaus Allofs hat-trick had the Germans 3-0 up after 65 minutes, but Holland had hope when Lothar Matthaeus – winning his first cap – conceded a penalty scored by Johnny Rep. Rene van de Kerkhof’s shot from distance with five minutes left was too little, too late.

6. Holland 2 Czech Republic 3, group stage, 2004
A game brim-full of irresistible attacking football from two very gifted teams. Goals from Wilfred Bouma and Ruud van Nistelrooy gave the Dutch a two-goal cushion inside twenty minutes but a defensive blunder allowed Jan Koller quickly to pull a goal back.

Both sides had plenty of chances before Milan Baros smashed a half-volley high into the net nineteen minutes from time. Holland were reduced to ten men when Johnny Heitinga was harshly dismissed for a second bookable offence, and things got worse in the 88th minute when Karel Poborsky clipped a square pass that gave Vladimir Smicer an easy finish.
