My story in Friday's's paper about Tatsuya Ichihashi, the presumed killer of Lindsay Hawker, generated a swift response in Tokyo. I reported (read it here) that, although the Chiba police continue their dogged investigation, their detective colleagues in Tokyo have concluded that he has committed suicide and is quietly decomposing in a forest somewhere.
Cue the following story from the Japanese new agency, Kyodo:
Japan denies report on suicide by suspect linked to slain Briton
TOKYO, Oct. 24 KYODO
The head of the National Public Safety Commission on Friday denied a British newspaper report that a man wanted in connection with the murder of British woman Lindsay Hawker near Tokyo ''has almost certainly committed suicide.''
But, on closer examination, it turns out to be in the great tradition of the Non-Denial Denial.
Tsutomu Sato said at a news conference that he ''has never heard of'' any information that the suspect, Tatsuya Ichihashi, committed suicide as the Times reported in its online edition Friday.
So, Kyodo's story would have been more accurate if had opened like this:
