Exclusive - Judy Garland behind the scenes of The Wizard of Oz
To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the film of The Wizard of Oz, we've been sent a couple of very nice and revealing behind-the-scenes clips. Harold Arlen, who composed the music for the film, was a lifelong camera buff and shot the 16mm footage during the cast portrait sittings for the film and visits to the set.
The first shows Judy Garland flirting with the Scarecrow ...
... and one of the Wicked Witch having a good old laugh.
It's fair to say The Times wasn't too impressed with the film on its release, apart from a grudging nod to the director's achievement in rounding up so many dwarfs - outdoing even the King of Spain.
Altogether the brilliance of the colour, in that black and white age, seems to have been a bit much for our reviewer.
The Wizard of Oz is re-released on Blu-ray and DVD by Warner Home Video priced £22.99
